Many smallholdings dot the area and are oases of small scale
production shining against a background of industrial arable farming. Swallow
Farm, the base for CERES, is a haven for wildlife. Farmland birds maintain a
foothold here. We still have populations of tree sparrows and yellowhammers on
the farm. Little Owls breed too and Barn Owls regularly hunt over the
smallholding and can be heard screaming at night. Voles and field mice scurry
through the long grass ahead of you and in turn these attract occasional weasels
and stoats.
All of these higher life forms are only there because we
value the life of the soil and the plethora of insects which grace the
smallholding.
Wildlife habitats, growing areas, animal pens and special
areas for contemplation merge seamlessly across the plot.
